Diatomaceous Earth Silica
Diatomaceous earth is the second most popular type of silica supplement, although it is rapidly gaining in popularity. Diatomaceous earth was formed from the remains of prehistoric algae called diatoms. These diatoms were abundant in numbers in the oceans and as they died, their exoskeletons formed huge deposits of diatomaceous earth in the bottom of the sea.
Through climate change, huge mineral deposits now lie on land and are for a variety of reasons, including for human consumption.
Compared to other silica supplements, diatomaceous earth is arguably the best detoxifier. The cylindrical shape of diatomaceous earth allows it to trap toxins and purge them through urination or bowel movements. Diatomaceous earth does have all of the other benefits of other silica supplements, although hit is clear that detoxification is its’ number one benefit.

Side Effects of Silica Supplements
For the most part, there appear to be no common severe side effects of silica supplements. It appears that any side effects of silica supplementation are directly related to the supplement and therefore can only be viewed on an individual basis.
Minor Side Effects of Silica Supplements
There are a few common minor side effects of silica supplements, most notable thirst. Silica naturally cleanses the body and absorbs water from the body. Therefore, you’ll need to make sure that you are drinking enough extra water per day to account for the loss of water.
As silica flushes your system, it may also flush out potassium from the body as well. It may be beneficial to take a potassium supplement or make an effort to consume more potassium while taking silica. Low potassium levels do not affect every silica user but it does appear to affect a considerable amount of silica users.
Horsetail Grass Side Effects
Horsetail grass, the most common silica supplement, does potentially have some risks associated with long-term use. According to preliminary research, horsetail may break down thiaminase, a chemical that breaks down thiamine. This could lead to a thiamine deficiency, which is why proper dosing is important.
Horsetail also appears to interact with lithium. Limited research suggests that long-term use could affect how well the body eliminates lithium from the body. Once again, this is why proper dosing is important.
Silica is not needed in large amounts on a daily basis. If taking a pill, try to limit the pill to 50 or 100mg of silica. If you’re taking a powder, there’s no need to use more than one to three teaspoons. The general rule is to start small and work your way up.
If you feel like silica has negatively impacted your health, then stop taking silica for a few days and start a lower dose. Symptoms should reside and you can continue to enjoy the benefits of silica.
While silica does have a few side effects, the benefits far outweigh the risks. Silica is one of the most beneficial supplements you can use and research finds more benefits of silica every year.
